A modular system with a new purpose

Tilted 90 degrees, the stem of eachT-shaped element becomes a seat, while the top surfaces and connecting sectionsform frames for generous planting beds. This flexible system accommodatesdifferent layouts, dimensions, and planting schemes, allowing each compositionto respond to its specific urban context.

Together, the modules create varied spatial zones that help organise movement while inviting people to pause, meet, and enjoy the life of the city. From streets and squares to spaces beside cafés and bars, the furniture offers both a functional framework and a welcoming place to stay

Historical remnants

Inventedin the 1950s, TT-elements revolutionised structural construction by enablingthe long spans required for large, open spaces such as warehouses, offices, sports halls, and parking structures. These prestressed concrete componentsfeature a distinctive double-T cross-section, combining high rigidity withrelatively low self-weight. Originally designed as structural floor and roofelements, TT-elements now offer new possibilities for circular urban design, repurposing widely available components recovered from industrial demolitionand urban redevelopment.

A subtle nod to the green Copenhagen Bench

The design draws on Copenhagen’s urban identity, with a subtle reference to the iconic green Copenhagen Bench. Reinterpreting this familiar element through reclaimed materials, modularity, and integrated planting, the TT-Module connects local design heritage with contemporary circular principles.

Tested at Fridtjof Nansens Square

The first prototype was installed at Fridtjof Nansens Square in 2025. Representing a smaller section of the largermodular system, the prototype tested the concept’s potential to combineplanting, seating, and social interaction in a robust solution for publicspace.

Following the initial installation, the designhas been implemented at multiple locations across Copenhagen, demonstrating itspotential to support permanent urban interventions that adjusts traffic, safetyand spatial qualities. Its modular configuration is particularly suited tosites where conventional approaches to greening and public-space design andtraffic management may be difficult to implement.

‍
Developed for Urban Life Initiative

‍The TT-Module was developed for the City of Copenhagen’s Grant for Urban Life Initiative (Bylivsgadepuljen) in collaboration with Tscherning and the Municipality of Copenhagen. The initiative supports greener streets and more vibrant urban life through projects proposed by local citizen groups. The module will be implemented at a total of 7 ‍locations by 2027 and can already be experienced at multiple sites. Check out our LinkedIn for the most recent update.
