16 streets in Copenhagen. One shared ambition: more urban life!

Reimagining Copenhagen’s streets as vibrant, green, and people-centered spaces

We are excited to share that Third Nature won the tender for Bylivsgader – Phase 3, for the City of Copenhagen’s Technical and Environmental Administration, aspart of the City of Copenhagen’s Grant for Lively Streets.

The project builds on the experience from phase 2 and now continues in phase 3 – which means that we now are working with an expected total of 16 streets across Copenhagen. The streets are selected through citizen applications and dialogue, ensuring that each project responds directly to local needs and aspirations.

The Grant for Lively Streets aims to reclaim space in the public realm and create better conditions for urban life through increased greenery, improved spaces for staying, and reduced car dominance. According to the City of Copenhagen’s Mobility Report 2024, 58% of the space between buildings is currently allocatedto carriageways and parking. The projects address this imbalance by transforming parts of existing sidewalks and roadway areas into inviting urban spaces with greenery, seating and traffic-calming measures.

Design solutions range from urban furniture and planters to more comprehensive spatial interventions, including the removal of parking where possible. The projects are primarily implemented as surface-based interventions on existing paving, while ensuring accessibility and movement for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

LINQTraffic Consulting is a key partner in traffic calming and mobility solutions.

A scalable urban experiment

Bylivsgader illustrates how small-scale, temporary interventions can transform urban streets into spaces that support greenery, social life, and local identity. The programme provides a testing ground for solutions like circular urban furniture, which can be adapted and applied elsewhere, advancing a broader vision for human-centered, livable streets across Copenhagen.
