The City of Copenhagen is currently testing a new piece of circular urban furniture, developed in collaboration with Third Nature and Tscherning, at Fridtjof Nansens Square. The furniture has been created to introduce more greenery and urban life into Copenhagen’s streets, even in locations where green solutions are typically difficult to implement.
Made from recycled concrete modules from construction sites, the furniture integrates reuse, planting, and seating into one cohesive solution. The design draws from Copenhagen’s classic urban identity, referencing well-known elements such as the green Copenhagen bench, while adding a contemporary and circular perspective.
The prototype now installed at Fridtjof Nansens Square represents a smaller segment of a larger modular design. It will be tested until September 2025 for its potential as a planting bed, meeting point, and robust, low-maintenance solution for public space. The aim is for the furniture to contribute systemically to new temporary and permanent urban interventions -especially in locations where conventional approaches are difficult to apply. If successful, the solution is intended for future rollout to other streets across Copenhagen.
The furniture has been developed specifically for the City of Copenhagen’s Grant for Lively Streets (Bylivsgadepuljen), which aims to create greener streets and more urban life. Projects within the initiative are based on proposals from local citizen groups, and Fridtjof Nansens Square is one of eight locations selected in the second round of the program.
The project is a collaboration between Third Nature, Tscherning, and the City of Copenhagen.
