Spaces for People and Community

The building is seamlessly woven into the existing urban structure, with entrances on all sides that make it easily accessible from every direction. Each entrance is accompanied by a carefully designed outdoor space inspired by the Ätradalens meadows and grasslands. Extending the city’s granite paving, recycled granite and natural stone create the ground surface, inviting greenery, seating areas, and play to unfold.

A Bright and Connected Heart

At the heart of the Culture House lies a bright atrium that connects the building’s entrances with the library. From the black box in the southern part of the building, visitors can move directly to an open-air stage and amphitheater for performances and spontaneous cultural events. The dedicated youth section, with its own entrance, allows for flexible opening hours and supports the diverse functions of the house.

"Uti vår hage" is an elegant proposal that opens up with windows and entrances in all directions. Here, cultural activities are given space in a beautifully designed indoor and outdoor environment. The building’s four volumes become an extension of the small town along Storgatan, and its space-efficient layouts make the footprint on the site modest. "Uti vår hage" preserves the town’s scale and the desire for an attractive outdoor environment for cultural activities. The small scale and respect for the town’s timber tradition make the proposal feel natural in its location and a fine addition for the people of Ulricehamn." - Rebecca Engvall, City Architect, Municipality of Ulricehamn
Building and Landscape Woven Together

The Culture House is carefully integrated into Ulricehamn’s urban structure and accessible from all directions. By reintroducing the site’s historic landscape, the project manages the area’s significant level differences, while filling the slope ensures that the entire square is activated and that no dark corners arise between the Culture House and Bogesundsgatan.

The reintroduction of the historic landscape creates space for green areas based on local vegetation with Swedish meadows, birch trees, and large stones, harmonizing with the site’s culture and characteristic landmarks. This increases both biodiversity and resilience to climate change, while simultaneously restoring the missing connection across the site.
